Chiropractic Care for Children in Manhattan, New York City
I can help your child overcome traditional pain related to spine adjustments, as well as finding natural remedies for common, and chronic illnesses. Any pain-relief treatment, or holistic solution that applies to adults, will also apply to children. However, I would like this opportunity to share with you my observations and experiences related to common health concerns children face today. Chiropractic Adjustments for Children
When I treat children for headaches and musculoskeletal pain, the gentle spinal movement and adjustments that I perform are geared specifically for their age group. A parent may wonder if I perform the same adjustments on adults as I do on children, and the answer is no. Many times I use about two pounds of pressure, and work with releasing the joints and muscles that have been compromised by their child’s poor ergonomics.
Chiropractic care for children is extremely effective in addressing musculoskeletal problems. Many parents who seek out chiropractic care for their kids understand that their children may have tight muscles and vertebrae that are pinching on nerves, just as they themselves do.
Another draw to chiropractic care by parents is a desire to avoid pumping up their kids with pain medications, which have been proven to be detrimental to the liver, digestive system, and kidneys. Parents want a natural, non-invasive, and effective treatment with very little risk.
Natural Remedies for Chronic Disorders
Another reason for many parents to seek chiropractic care for their children is the child’s diagnoses of ADD and ADHD. Body work in general has been proven to have a positive impact on the mind and the nervous system. Endorphins are released, while stress and pressure are taken off the child’s nervous system through gentle spinal movement. Parents have reported their child’s symptoms improving dramatically with chiropractic care, which makes this is great addition to drug and nutritional therapy. Presently, there are studies being conducted with chiropractic care that preliminarily show very positive outcomes in supporting children with these diagnoses.
If a child has pain in their body, it should be addressed to ensure that it doesn’t become chronic and develop into something worse as an adult.
Many parents love them and hate them at the same time. No, not their kids, but the electronic devices that their children are using every day. From the smartphone, which allows a parent to communicate with their child when they are not together, to the iPad, which may keep their child occupied on those extra-long car rides, these devices have benefits and detriments.
Many parents realize that the use of these devices should be limited because of the way it may be affecting their child’s physical and mental health.
From a chiropractic standpoint, one of the big pitfalls of these electronic devices is the effects they are having on a child’s body. Children are texting and hunching over these devices for many hours, causing problems for their growing spines.
One of the big postural distortions that these devices cause is a “text neck.” The neck has a natural curve that balances the weight of the head on the spine. The more the head is flexed (chin pointing down) the greater the weight on the cervical spine. When the head is in a neutral position, the weight on the spine is somewhere around 10 to 12 pounds.
A study published in the Journal of Surgical Technology International revealed that as the head tilts forward the forces on the cervical spine increases dramatically. When the head is tilted 15 degrees from the neutral position, the weight of the head actually is more like 27 pounds. At a 45 degree tilt, this weight increase on the cervical spine is more like 50 pounds. This is a huge stress on a child’s spine.
The rise in parents seeking my care for their children’s musculoskeletal problems has increased dramatically. These children are primarily coming to see me for severe headaches, tendonitis in their wrists and elbows, neck pain, mid-back pain, and shoulder pain. While troubleshooting many of these cases, I noticed a majority of children are not maintaining proper posture while using their devices, and hunched over them for hours at a time.
When I explain to parents what their child’s postural positions are doing to their bodies, they are very quick to encourage their children to make changes. I show them some simple neck exercises involving gentle rotation, and give them ergonomic advice on how to use their devices.
One of the key things for parents to do is to encourage their children to hold their devices differently by getting the screen to eye level, or slightly below eye level. When a child is sitting in the back of the car or on a sofa, I encourage them to bring their arms together and bend their elbows. Place their elbows on their abdomen with their hands pointing up with their devices, while making sure to keep the shoulder blades resting downward. This will bring their devices close to eye level, and is much more comfortable for the neck and shoulders once they get used to it. It’s also much healthier.
