Nutrition Response Testing is an offshoot and hybrid of
Applied Kinesiology which is a diagnostic tool and health care system used by medical doctors, homeopaths, naturopaths, chiropractors, acupuncturists and many other alternative-care practitioners. The underlying principle is that the body is run by chemical and electrical signals that are sent from (and back to) the brain via the spinal cord and the fluid nervous system.
There are normal and abnormal reflexes that are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. A muscle may react weak, hypertonic or neutral depending on what is being tested in close proximity to certain acupuncture points on the body. If these specific reflexes are reacting abnormally, it gives the practitioner information on what is causing problems for a person or what may help a person to get better.
The fundamental principle of Nutrition Response Testing and Dr. Michael Lebowitz's protocol is to figure out if there is toxicity and food sensitivities that are contributing to a person's symptoms. It was my own health issues that led me to becoming a Nutrition Response Testing Practitioner. About four years ago I was working long days as a traditional chiropractor. I realized that I was constantly exhausted; the only thing I had energy for was my work, and even that was a struggle. I had been using nutritional supplementation in my chiropractic practice and was very interested in pursuing it further.
My initial test lead me to the discovery that I had parasites, fungus, and heavy metal mercury toxicity. I have to say that I felt a little embarrassed, since I always tried to set a healthy example for my patients. I was put on an extensive supplement regimen with amazing results:

A Patient Case Study for Nutrition Response Testing
Carly was a 37-year-old graphic designer who was referred to me by her acupuncturist, who thought maybe I could help her with an unconventional problem that wasn’t showing improvement. Carly had lost her sense of smell, which had started about 3 years before she walked into my office. Carly indicated that her smell had gone from what she considered a good sense of smell to no sense of smell, within a one-month period.
I performed nutrition response muscle testing on Carly and she muscle tested positive for food sensitivities to dairy and soy. She also tested for a barrage of heavy metals, specifically, cadmium, beryllium, and aluminum. The nutritional supplements Chelaco from Standard Process, Takesumi and Camu from supreme nutrition, and Metalchord from Energetix, all blocked the metals and negated the positive muscle test.
After Carly's initial visit, she returned three weeks later and said that her sense of smell was unchanged that she still felt like she had no sense of smell. Carly came in for her third visit, after being on Chelation supplements for six weeks. She reported that she started to sense that her smell was improving five weeks after starting the protocol.
At her fourth visit, which fell on her nine-week point of taking the nutritional supplements, Carly was exuberant. She reported that her smell was eighty percent better. She was excited to smell again, and couldn’t believe that she was experiencing all the good and not so good smells of New York City once again.
During this visit, she no longer muscle tested for any of the heavy metals. They were not registering at all, which implied that she had cleared them from her body. After six months of starting her protocol, Carly had regained one hundred percent of her smell back. She continues to report improvement in other symptoms that she struggled with for years, like severe PMS, muscle cramps, and fatigue.
