All cases of Rosacea are unique to what is happening in your body. Millions of Americans struggle with some type of skin disorder, and over 15 million Americans are affected by Rosacea, which is a symptoms-based disorder and may or may not include all or some of the following symptoms:

  • Red or pink skin on the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin
  • Broken blood vessels on the face
  • Extremely sensitive skin that gets flushed and red when it is hot, with sun exposure, and with certain skin products
  • Pronounced pimples or acne
  • Big and inflamed pores
  • Bloodshot or watery eyes
  • Plaques and bumpy skin patches
  • Skin pain when exposed to extreme weather and stress

Many people are baffled by the cause and why their symptoms come and go without an explanation. Many of the physical symptoms of Rosacea are annoying and irritating, in addition to the mental and emotional toll, which can be quite debilitating for Rosacea sufferers.

The skin is an indicator of our overall health. If the skin is showing symptoms, it can mean there are deeper levels of imbalance that require attention to help the skin to heal properly. Rosacea is an indicator that there is inflammation in the body and that the body is having some difficulty retaining homeostasis. It is an entire body problem, and the whole body needs to be addressed to support Rosacea sufferers. Many topical creams can help with symptom relief, but creams do not resolve the underlying reason for the body’s reaction; thus, the problem will persist.

Holistic Care for Chronic Rosacea

In the medical community, there is no agreed-upon cause of Rosacea. Still, research science has shown some possibility of a connection between an imbalance of microorganisms on the skin and in the gut, genetic factors, food sensitivities, autoimmune disease, and poor circulation.

The key to supporting patients who have Rosacea is figuring out what foods they are sensitive to, correcting nutritional deficiencies, supporting their immune system, promoting gut health, eradicating toxicity and microbial imbalance, and helping to restore the body to homeostasis.

Some Rosacea sufferers have issues with blood sugar handling, sensitivities to certain foods (like dairy, wheat, and corn), stomach acidity imbalances, poor digestion, nutritional malabsorption issues, a sluggish gallbladder, and other body imbalances.

Nutritional muscle testing identifies many imbalances in the body that can be contributing to the symptoms of Rosacea. The goal of testing is to identify underlying causes that are affecting the skin and come up with solutions that can support dermatological health. Nutritional supplements can help restore the body into balance, which helps to support the Rosacea sufferer.

If it is discovered that someone has a deficiency in a specific vitamin or mineral, by correcting the deficiency, the immune system may function better, which can help the skin heal. If someone has an overload of toxicity, eradicating toxins and ridding the body of immune challenges can help and support skin health.

A Case Study of a Former Rosacea Sufferer

Alexia is a 42-year-old woman who came into my office frustrated by her visits to the dermatologist. She has suffered from Rosacea since she was 17 years old. Her first symptoms appeared after the stress of filling out her college entrance applications. At first, she thought that her skin had an allergic reaction, but the symptoms never ceased. She changed all of her skin care products and tried numerous modalities but didn’t achieve much change in her condition. She complained of the multiple times that she had gone back to her dermatologist (whom she mentioned that she really likes) because a cream she had been given was no longer working to calm her Rosacea.

Alexia ate pretty cleanly but wasn’t aware of the foods that may cause a sensitivity or problem for her body. She was ready to do almost anything to help her condition. She said that even more than physical pain, Rosacea interfered with her life, and in many social situations, she felt like it held her back. She often felt embarrassed and felt like her skin kept her from being her best self because it made her feel self-conscious.

The initial nutritional muscle testing revealed that she had food sensitivities to dairy, corn, gluten, white rice, white potatoes, cashews, and onions. She was already dairy-free, and at another time, she was gluten-free but hadn’t seen much change going off dairy and gluten. (She did say her skin had improved maybe five to ten percent by cutting out dairy and gluten.) What was revealed was that the other foods that showed up positive from muscle testing were foods that she would consume pretty regularly, for instance, she was eating a cashew-based cheese as a substitute for dairy. Unfortunately, if someone switches a food sensitivity for another food that he or she is sensitive to, it can be just as bad for the immune system.

There were some immune system challenges that also showed up in her test. She muscle tested for a fungus vial, heavy metal vials (aluminum and cadmium), a glyphosate vial, and the estriol vial. She was given a detoxification and balancing protocol to support her body. After her initial testing, she came in for a three-week follow-up.

During the follow-up visit, I changed one supplement and kept her on most of her original plan. She did clear the fungal vial after three weeks, so some of the food limitations that were specific to that issue were modified.

After three weeks, Alexia reported that her skin was less red. She said that during the first ten days, her skin seemed about the same, but after about two weeks, she started to notice a significant change. Then her skin plateaued for about two months and stayed at about a fifty percent improvement level. However, after three months on the protocol, she came into the office and said that her skin was about eighty percent better.

At that point, she brought in all of her facial skin products to muscle test, and this identified what was not good for her skin. We were able to determine what tested well with her body and what products were causing a problem for her. Establishing which skin care products were right for her and the skin care products that were problematic helped her to remain symptom-free.
